Speedo problem

Firstly, as this is my first post on the forum i just wanted to say hello to all.

Now on to the problem.

I have a 2000 [x-reg] corsa envoy 5dr 1.0l. The other day i got in and started driving to find my speedo wasn't working. After searching google, i found this forum and had a look through the posts and found a couple of similar problems.
I read in one of the posts that speedos are either electrical [if they start at zero] or cable [if they start at ten] mine's electrical.
I also read in the same post that it is most likely a blown fuse, and that the fuse is shared with that of the cigarette lighter.

Now i've tested the cigarette lighter and it doesn't work any more either. So i read that the fuse that covers these is number 17, looking at the panel, i went to a local parts shop, took the 17 fuse out and asked them for a replacement one [the fuse is red and has a number 10 on it]. Upon placing the new fuse into the slot, i found it still doesn't work.

So, firstly have i replaced the fuse and done everything correctly?
secondly? What else can i do to get it working?

Thanks in advance :)

Just a quick update, i discovered that the fuse in question was actually the number 18 one [yellow with a 20 on it] after buying a new one of these, i replaced it and could easily see the old one had blown [wire broken, burnt bits inside the plastic], once driving the speedo still wasn't working and when i got home i checked the new fuse only to find that had also blown.

So i'm guessing i have a short circuit somewhere, but i have no idea where this could be. Does anyone have any ideas of the places i should be looking for the short?

I think you have been reading a post I had replied to not that long ago.

Most people blow this fuse becuase they have droped a coin in the cigarette lighter socket. Check that there isn't anything in there, there ashtray and cigarette ligter is very easy to remove take it out and check the wiring a previous owner may have used the wires to power something else and not put it all back properly.

Fuse 18 is also for the central locking system, reverse lights and automatic transmission.

i'm gussing you don't have an auto but you should check the wring for the reversing lights and central locking

No coins in there, but it seems that the cigarette lighter itself was pushed right into the socket, seemingly forced, i've pulled it out now, but haven't had a chance to get a new fuse to test it [shop's closed], could that have been the cause?

That could be it hard to tell without seeing it.
make sure that the socket itself isn't damaged, if it is you can unplug it untill you can get a replacement.
To remove the lighter socket you have to remove the ash tray which is held in by three scews you can clearly see them, unscew them the ash tray will come away and then remove the cables from the back of the cig lighter socket. the lighter socket itself is just cliped into the ashtray.
Buy a few spare fuses just incase.
