hi daz welcome to the site . firstly i would recommend giving you car a full service . and if the car still plays up after a few miles then i would get a diagnostic done seeming as the engine light is on . if you car is running rubbish like its very resricticted it could be you air flow meter.

No offence but if I was buying a car and there was no water in the expansion tank I would walk away.
Where did you buy it from I would try get a refund If it was advertised as having no faults but it clearly does because the engine management light is on then you can demand a refund.
What engine is in it?
As for the faults do this:

more information here:

No water in the coolant and heaters not working would sugezt to me its overheated and the headgasket has gone, is there white slundge underneath the oil fillercap and on the dipstick? does the water in the expansion tank look oily.
Or it could just be that there is a hole somewhere are you are leeking coolant, and the heaters don't work because some air has got trapped in the matrix, and the bad running is down to something else.

Hayden the car still pulled really well on the test drive had one of thease before and this one feels alot quicker for some reason and there was no managment light on when I test drove it and unfortuntly it was purchaed from eBay so no come backs there is no milky oil I think water has just Been over looked.
Had a look today there is a split in the intake hose going to the air flow metre filter is black so got a service kit and try and get a hose I think it must be detecting unmetred air any other suggestions would be good it's having diagnostic later to check
Thanks for all the replies daz

Replaceing the air filter and the split hose should make a difference, It sounds like the car hasn't been looked after so a realy good service would be a good idea.
Oil and filter
fuel filter
air filter
Spark plugs
coolant flush
and get the brakes looked at
those links I posted shows how to do a diagnostic check yourself for free.
