Hi and welcome to the site.

To answer your question no don't just spray the bumpers.

A.) The inside. Either take the parts out or get same parts from scrap yeard. Then you need to rub them down with wet and dry paper (grade 600 - 800), once they have gone a dull colour, you need to plastic primer them. You ca then if you wanted add filler primer to try and remove the bobble effect from the plastic. Then the top coat after giving the plastic primer a light rubbing down with 1200 or 1500 grade paper. Use some g3 or t-cut on the top coat and then lacquer to give it a nice shine.

B.) basically the same as the interior but you need to rub colour coded bumpers down (until you get rid of the orange peel effect, catch the light on it and you'll see what i mean). Then use normal primer. If it's the black plastic bits then do the same as the interior.

Hope this helps.

hey!

Thank you for that matey!
sure im gunna love this forum!

I got some grey plastic primer seen as im using green top coat which i know is right
Tried something similar to that and got bubbling and allsorts....maybe due to rushing it i dunno

im gunna get some bits from the scrappy and have a go tomorrow

so its...
Clean like a B***H (meths and a good scrub!)
Rub down with 600 until smooth
Plastic Primer (im using halfords grey, got some better quality clear aswell to put on underneath that)
1200 the primer until smooth, add another coat if needed
Top coats in light layers leaving to dry properly inbetween coats (that was probs my let down!)
Good bit of green T-CUT on the paint before a good few coats of lacquer

Im going for it 2morra with the cans now!

To be honest don't rush it.

When i paint unless it is extremely hot i will let each layer e.g. primer, top coat, lacquer dry normally a week to make sure it's completly dry before rubbing down and then next stage of paint. If hot you might be able to get 2 stages done, but don't rush.

The bubbling could be from rushing and painting when paint not realy dry. Could also be from to much paint added. I've had it happen due to to much paint. Between layers/stages again clean it with meths to make sure no grease on the paint.

Have a look at My project log (project panda) Danthemans, Roperstun and JarJar89's for tips and interior/exterior painting ideas and examples.

morning!

ok ive sprayed my glove box handle (start small!) using the method we agreed on and OMG
.....it comes out brilliant! its perfect with no blemishes or anything
The T-CUT after paint and before lacquer really helps it to a great shine!

its bin sanded inbetween stages of primer and paint and left to dry each layer in the baking sun for 20mins each time

it looks great!
trip to the scrapyard coming up for interior bits i reckon! 8)

see there u go! I'm pleased ur pleased! Remember if it's not sunny i'd give a couple of days hardenin time between each stage! Otherwise u might find it's stil wet underneath! If anythin even in sunny conditions i'd say 20mins in my opinion is stil a bit quick 2paint next stage etc but if ur happy with how it turns out then thats ok! U'll have 2get some pictures up so we can see what u've been doin!

TBH using aerosol paints won't give a great finnish (even if its glossy to begin with it will lose it's shine),

To paint any thing you first need degrease with solvent wipes and key the surface either using a scotch pad (better for plastics) or 600/800 grit sand paper,

If your painting plastic you need to spray some plastic adhesion premoter over the surface, then if you want to get rid of the moulded surface texture you need to use a plastic primer (plastic primer remains flexable to reduce the risk of cracking once it has dried), once the primer is dry you will need to flat the surface , to ensure a nice flat surface it is best to give the primer a guide coat (light dusting with black or other dark colour) so that whn you are flating you can easily see any low spots because the low spots will stay black, if you end up breaking through to plastic before all the black spopts are gone dont worry it just means you need to apply another coat of primer, when flatting you want to use a wet and dry 800grit paper in a bucket of warm soapy water,

Once you are happy that your surface is nice and smooth you need to dry the panels and remove all the flatting dust (idealy using a tacky cloth, found in most auto factors) and degrease the panel again to avoid silicone/grease spots, you are then ready to apply your base/colour coat, (its not realy wise to leave too much time between coats as you risk reaction/crackling when using aerosols, also not a good idea to mix brands as they are more likly to react than paint of the same brand)

once your panel is nicely covered with your chosen colour, it is time for laquar (if your not after a satin finish) I would not recommend polishing the base coat before the laquar is applied as it will leed to the laquar peeling/flacking off over time, If you have imperfections in the laquer you need to wait untill every thing is dry, Then you can use some 1000-1500 grit paper to take out the imperfections THEN use your t-cut or whatever poilish to restore the gloss, this flating and polishing of the laquer is what gives alasting deep shine.

Hope this helps guys.

Prawny

If your using a spray gun and compressor, the technique is pretty much the same except you will need to buy a plasticising additive for your paint, primer and laquar, to stop cracking when the panels are flexed/ heated and cooled etc.
