Hello all , My corsa b broke down after coming out of the Mersey Tunnel yesterday (thankfully not in the tunnel) . There was just suddenly a lack of power and it wouldnt start . Called AA the guy said its the Fuel Pump and also said the Head Gasket is on its way out . He said I should just get the fuel pump fixed and then get rid of it . I am going to attempt doing the job of replacing the pump myself and according to the Haynes Manual its not too diffucult , as a novice I just wanted your advice on this picture of a 2nd hand pump I have spotted for sale online . Basically does it look like the right type for a 1994 Corsa or can you spot any bits missing ?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-CORSA-B- ... 286.c0.m14
I have spent so much on this car recently and don't want to waste my money if its wrong for my car . Any other advice or tips about doing the job are very welcome . Thanks in advance .

if it is the fuel pump mate it isnt that hard need to check if yours is spi or mpi as the mpi has more pressure. as you have a haynes its a good start i had the same thing said last week and replaced mine (hardest bit is to take the locking ring off as its a bit tight. once i took mine off i tested it by getting 2 wires from the battery ans connecting it to the pump it should buzz like crazy if it dont its knakard (which mine did bloody 30 qwid down the drain ). another good thing is to check the relay (summit im goin to do 2moro) get another one from the scrappy is a good idea.
good luck dude

Hally thanks for the advice , it says in the Haynes about the buzzing and that it should buzz when i turn the ignition . I lifted up the back seat and turned ignition and couldn't hear anything , would I need to be under the car while doing this and get some one to turn the ignition ? Thanks for tips about the fuel relay , I think I will pick one of those up too then . You mention about Mpi - Spi what does this stand for and how could I check what mine is ?
edit --- Ok I worked out that its single and multi point injection but unsure how to tell what mine is . Will look through manuals maybe they will give me a clue .

Ok i have worked out that I have the X12 SZ engine in my 1994 LS , im going to replace the pump but as Hally warned me I have to get the correct type . According to what I can gather from the extremely confusing section in the Haynes manual . There are 3 Fuel injection systems -----
1. Single-Point fuel Injection (multec)
2. Multi-point fuel injection - SOHC engines (Multec "M")
3 Multi-Point fuel injection - DOHC engines (Multec "S")
Im pretty sure mine is the first one but I need one of you kind people to confirm this ! I want to get this fixed asap and that pump in the above link seems a decent price and affordable to me , I don't want to lose out on it . Can anybody say for sure if its the right type of pump or would you advise I ask the seller for more info like what type of Corsa it came out of perhaps ?

the guy selling the pump on Ebay just replied to say it is out of a 1994 Corsa 1.4 Sri . Same age as mine but I haven't the foggiest whether the pump is compatible with my 1994 1.2 LS . Let me know how you get on with your problem Hally as you may have the exact same thing going on , did you get around to getting another Fuel Relay from the Scrappies ?

ok i have a few ideas now , going to get a fuel relay switch from a scrappies . Going to change Fuel filter and going to take out Fuel pump from under back seat and take the filter off the bottom of the pump and give it a good clean .
Read this on another Corsa site before where a guy seemed to be having same issues as me . -
http://www.allcorsa.co.uk/forums/showth ... 20965.html
he finally fixed it by cleaning the filter inside the fuel pump . I am tearing my hair out here and if after these 3 things it still wont work I will get a 2nd hand fuel pump try that and then its off to car heaven because I have spent to much recently and earn sod all .

I have just taken out the pump today Hally . Boy oh Boy what a pain in the arse getting that locking ring to turn !! I took it out thinking i could try cleaning the filter at bottom of pump then re-fit . It didn't look to dirty to be honest but when i looked into the tank after taking out the whole pump etc I could see a fair bit of dirt and grit just in the part where the pump sits .
The tank is still half full so I will need to siphon all the fuel out to get at this dirt . I remember the AA man said the pump wasnt working and he perhaps did some kind of test to find this out at roadside so Im probably wasting time by even cleaning the filter but its worth a try I suppose .
I think it was you who said you tested your old original pump on the car battery ? I reckon I need to do this before refitting so please tell me how you do this .
Did you have any luck replacing the fuel relay switch and out of interest how much did the scrappies charge you for the the fuel pump and fuel relay switch ?
also my head feckin hurts from all the time i spent removing that bloody locking ring the petrol fumes half killed me so if post doesnt make sense thats why !

i paid 10bobs for the pump which was alrite
and i just got the relay off a autoparts shop that was 5.99 (saved me goin back around the yard lol)
yep i nearly died off those bloody fumes and luckly the ring is easier to put bak on
the way i tested it was to get the pump out of the houseing and u will see the 2 connectors cor the pump (live and earth) i just connected the right bits to the battery using a coupple of peaces of wire, once connected it should buzz like a rabbit lol
( take petrol out of pump 1st as mine squirted a bit
)
gona blast on with the relay but this is looking less likely as the problem is when trying to turn the car over 2day im sure i herd the pump go on but i didnt hear it prime so thats another thing ive got to check
just leave a msg on here about how u get on

Great News I got the old girl going today , tested pump as Hally suggested and nothing so got a pump from Scrappy this afternoon for £35 (bit steep but cheaper than the majority of used ones on EBAY ) took the pump out of housing and slotted it into mine then after bloody ages of fiddling trying to get the hose clips back on I gave up and bought some of the ones with the screw bolt in from Motorworld .
Car is running great and my mate says the AA man was talking bull saying the head gasket is gone/going . So hopefully I can get a few more months out of this before flogging it towards a bigger car for when I begin on the Taxis .
Big thanks to Hally from the forum for his advice and I hope you get yours sorted out soon too.
