Engine Problems (Engine lights, Starting troubles...)

Post by hallda12 »

Ok so i have a Corsa 1.2 (Eco tech engine) and recently i have been having trouble with the engine. If i have left it without the engine switched on for a few hours (over night is worse) i have problems setting off after i have started the engine.

So i have just started the engine and i put my foot on the Accelerator and the engine fails to gain revs, it just judders like its trying and the rev needle sort of bounces up and down slightly. but if i press gently on the accelerator it gains the revs no problem but you have to be red lining the rev meter in like 1st gear and 2nd gear to reach 30 miles an hour.

Ok so thats the first problem,

so once ive managed to set off properly i will be driving along and all of a suddon the engine light will come on and the car will not go any faster until i either take my foot off the accelerator and put it back on or change gear, then the light go's off. its extremly anoying when im going up a hill and i lose all revs and have to go into 2nd and rev the sh*t out of it.

since both these problems have started happening my car has been very sluggish. It struggles to get to 70 on duel carridge ways.

I have taken it to the garage and the guy plugged the engine into his computer and he found that the Tempreture censor on the engine was faulty and it was reading that the engine was at -40 degres. he said that because of this its putting more fuel in the engine therefore its choking it. so he replaced the censor but there was no change, the faults still occur so i took it back and its currently booked in for another look.

By the way (This guy wont be scamming me like some cowboy machanics do)

So if anyone has any ideas or has had these problems and help would be apreciated.

Common things that ussualy fail casusing these sorts of problems are.
Mass Air Flow sensor failed
EGR valve stuck open
Crank sensor
Lambda sensor

You can check the ECU for recorded faults without plugging a computer in the engine. Do a search for the paperclip test, it will explain how putting a paper clip in the OBD socket you can get the emgine management light to flash. count the flashes and you get your fault code.

The engine will be fine, as said above its a egr/afm or something like that. When an engine is shagged it usually makes horrible noises.

I have the same issue with my car Corsa V reg 1999 16V. I have tried unplugging every single sensor to see if there is any difference but its same all the time. The previous owner had overfilled the oil perhaps this might be the cause. Another thing I sometimes hear a kind of chain noise, may be the timing is out or timing chain needs replacing as it slips and doesn't sit properly but not sure. This problem is getting worse day by day. If it was just a failed sensor then it would be same all the time wouldn't it. I think something it wearing out and I strongly think its my timing chain slipping.

When I fill it with fuel, I feel smoothness for couple of minutes but after that it returns to the same problem.

Any help is mostly appreciated please

Thanks

Rip off. £200 max from a mechanic that includes head skimming.

If the head gasket is gone it needs fixed full stop. You can't really see if it has other problems before this is fixed.
Check inside the oil filler cap to see if it's creamy, if so it's a sure sign the head gasket is gone.
