Major induction kit and engine problem

As u may know i bought an enclosed induction kit with a cold air feed the other day for my 1.2 16v engine. I did have a derestricted and drilled airbox b4 with a k&n panel filter. Now when i first fitted it it seemed 2 create some problems - it caused a lot of flatspots (about 3 per gear!) and if i went at a hight speed (60 upwards) the engine management light would keep coming on and i would seem to loose power and slow down. Anyway ive got one of those self-learning ecus so i decided to disconect the battery overnight and reset the ecu to see if it helped. Now it has helped a bit but still not much. Its still causing problems

Now im wondering whats exactly causing this problem... ive got a few ideas:

1) The cold air feed is much bigger than the standard one (it looks like a tumble dryer pipe lol) and is mounted directly behind the honeycomb grill i have so its getting a lot more air than it was designed for into the engine. Obv this gets greater at speed so could explain the em light problem as there aint enough fuel being injected. Could this be it?

2) Could it be the filter (which is only about a year old) needs cleaning and if so how would i do this? The make is apiro btw and as i got it second hand i dont have any instructions

3) Is this behaviour all completely unheard of and actually this is a more serious engine problem? Its only done 62k miles but various things go on older engines like this?

Another problem ive just remembered is my mpg has massively fallen. Ive been through a lot more petrol than usual this week and hardly driven anywhere. Is this usual for an induction kit or is it due to these problems?

Sorry for the massive essay there every1. Hope some1 can shed some light onto this for me

i had the tube pointin dwn behind the light and i had no troubles what so ever and it actually improved my mpg.

u mit be forcing more air into the engine then it actually needs so ur efectivly over fueling the engine with air

Whats an uprated air flow meter? How much is it likely to cost and where should i get it from?

And thnx carl - thats what im thinkin as well. I'll try moving the pipe to somewhere a bit more hidden and give it a test

That filter thing doesn't look terribly efficient to me. Looks a bit restrictive tho I stand to be corrected.
