Lost 5th Gear

For some reason I can no longer select 5th gear, it's like it's not there at all. Anyone had this problem before? could it be the linkage? if so what do I need to replace? bushes etc or could it be the gearbox as I understand 5th gear is setup slightly different to the others?

two of my mates hav had this happen in there polo's they say its the gear in the box thats f**k + if it was the linkage moore than likely u'd have problems gettin it in all gears.

but i cud be wrong

Is there anything different regarding gearchanging? If nothing else is affected then it's a gearbox problem. Lost cog somehow.

yer if it was you gear linkage gone , you would have trouble gettin into other gears e.d reverse . so it may well be a problem inside gearbox as said above

Yeah I was thinking the same, gearbox it is then.

My car's due a MOT does anyone know if it would fail with 5th gear not working? I only ask as pointless me shelling out for gearbox if going to fail on a load of other stuff.

nope your gears wnt be checked , so ur okay
