1.2 8v is sick :(

Post by plexo »

hey guys, have a 1.2 8v 1998 corsa b diamond here

has been through the wars! 8 owners in its life and 3 crashes that i know of, 1 major others where minor, has had loads of troubles with it i think past owners didnt want to bother with it and has been abused

107k on the clock, problem i have is loud tappets, i lifted the rocker cover off and seems that the fourth cylinder is running quite dry compared to the rest, seems like a blockage, i poked about abit trying to unblock it and it did work for a while, but has came problematic again i am just wondering is there any recommendation i can have to clear the oil jets? have had a look there has been a small amount of damage so the ticking wont go away completely but it should quieten down a good bit if i get it unblocked!

thanks for any help guys much appreciated!

anyone any ideas?

carb cleaner? wd40? are they ok to use? anything to break down the dirt stuck in the jet?

or would it be the pump maybe ?

just want to know if the likes of carb cleaner and the likes would be an issue to make more problems than it fixes?

when you removed the rocker cover was it full of the black death/black sludge?

try poking the hole again to clear it and drain the oil, you could even take the sump off and clean it to make sure no gunk is in it. if you want you can then put get an engine flush in to help clear the system but it isnt recommended if the engine is full of sludge, so if you do choose to flush it i would take the sump off and clean it 1st so any sludge in it wont get dragged through your oil galleries. the flush is your choice, i would definatley drain the oil, take the sump and rocker cover off, give them both a good clean, put them back on and put fresh oil and oil filter in and see how it goes.

thanks mate :)

i was going to use compressed air to clear it too that should be ok?

yes on top of the rocker cover in the inside of it the fourth cylinder location has some sludge around it, will run engine flush through it next week or so wen i have time :)

i dont see why the compressed air wouldnt work.

since the rocker cover etc is full of sludge i would drain the oil and take off the sump and clean it just incase that is full of sludge, the engine flush will lift it from the sump otherwise and drag it through the oil galleries and could make the car worse by blocking other galleries etc.

i love the 1.2 8valves. i have nearly finished stripping my old one, great little car and very easy to work on, plus everythings cheap for em. love em lol

thanks for posts guys

bit of an update sat and cleaned the car today patched up a few rust spots aswell lol

just a bit of history here just over a month ago was having really really bad problems with it crankshaft sensor went on it stopping starting because of it, massive loss of power, clutch slipping (dodgy cable) and some other problems, 1 of which was suggested headgasket, loss of power etc said that would explain it, the oil filler cap had the usual mayo stuff over it, oil change was done 3 months prior along with air filter and oil filter, instead of replacing head gasket we used something called steel seal, ran it through its engine cycle and that helped it a bit, we then cleaned out all the breathers as before, tried our best to unblock the oil jet (it did work a hell of a lot better for about 3 weeks) we also replaced the fuel injector (not full module, cleaned the complete module but replaced the rubber o ring sealer and the injector itself that has the cable coming out of it, the original seal was to say the least useless, making the car crap for fuel economy and also made it run like a dogs dinner because it was being far overfueled.

anyways..

cleaned all the breathers out again today, same kack was in it from before so going to change oil in next few days, and maybe oil filter might be best again too

i suspected the oil jet was blocked up again since the ticking was back, i was right, took rocker cover off and had a poke with a very very small screwdriver, went in the slightest bit, then stopped, i checked others and the screwdriver just went through the hole no problems, fourth was bunged up with what resembles grit, i cleaned as much grit as possible out of it, along with around the rocker cover and the surroundings, lubed it a little with some oil just so it wasnt dry completely (like it basically was running)

seems to of helped a good bit still hesitates a little when u put the boot down from idle with clutch in but used to just knock off so its a good sign...

as for sump dan i asked a mate of mine he says its a bit hard to take off any tips when taking it off?

i personally hate corsas now lol this 1 has had more hits than elvis

just while i remember anyone any tips on removing scratches from front lights? have a set of angel eyes in at the minute the lense is quite scratched isnt looking the best :(

just a bit of an update after a bit of a run after clearin out the breathers etc again and unblocking the jet, it has picked up a good bit from before ticking noise is minimal for now, i know its a temp fix but xmas is coming and pockets are getting empty lol maybe ave to wait til after xmas til i can do a full service...

another question if anyone has had this before, its been like this since i bought the car filling up at a petrol station takes bloody AGES, ive had people giving me funny looks because it takes me so long to fill up, i dont go past a tenner because it takes so long lol...

when i am filling up it keeps clicking off, unless i go really slowly, ive tried putting the nozzle in every which way possible having it half out upside down (sometimes didnt go so well lol) and all sorts, i know 2 petrol stations that allow me to fill up fast, but i think the clicker thing is broken on their pump cus its only 1 pump that does it in the petrol station, i purposely wait at that 1 til its free just so i dont sit like a retard filling up at 1p a second lol...

i have been reading up about possibly a breather is blocked for the fuel tank (blocked breathers whats new ...) can anyone point me in right direction where this could be? i have asked a few people but they havent a clue never had the problem...

haha i had the exact same problem with mine. you have to be under the vehicle looking at the tank to find the breather. i used to beable to move the nozzle and top up abit quicker but it wud take 5-10 minutes just to put £30 in. i got told mine was a vacuum problem with the tank so i left it, couldnt be bothered messing with it
