steering issues

Hi all from Oz.
I have a 2004 Holden Barina 1.4 L 5 speed (Vauxhall Corsa)
Has anyone had an intermittent steering problem with their car ?
I have had the car for 14 months and it has not been in an accident. The steering becomes extremely robotic and stiff as if there is no power assistance at all, then overnight or a few days later, the steering becomes a bit easier to handle but not perfect. When driving at any speed, you can turn the wheel in any direction and it will stay in that position and not return. It is a struggle to steer the car as this problem is extremely intermittent.I have had the tyres balanced and rotated, but no wheel alignment as yet but told that it could be an electrical problem, possibly a wire earthing out causing the problem ? Several mechanics has checked the car and come back with nothing. There are no fault codes coming up when checked on an analyser, even by the car manufacturer.Has anyone had or heard of this problem before ?
