cd plyer/ignition

hey i have got a 1996 p reg trip and i have a problem with the cd player not turning on when i turn on the ignition unless i push and hold the key in
does anybody have any ideas what may be wrong with it?

i had this got family mechanic and he sorted it out. it put it so its live all the time. so i got to turn it off when i leave the car. something todo with the ignition think he said. said cost me to get new one like £20 but free and hassel free todo the live option.
