look on top of the gearbox where the linkage goes into the box .there is a spring loaded pin pull linkage over clockwise and push pin in and it will lock the linkage, now under the car on main gear rod is a torque headed bolt loosen that .now lift up the gearlever gaiter look on the left you will see a small hole ,push lever to left and drop a drill bit into the hole and the corresponding hole beneath this will lock the lever.make sure the gearbox is still locked by the pin .retighten pinchbolt on gear rod from underneath .gearlinkage now timed up correctly simples.......

Hello ,
Massively a common fault on the Vauxhalls , particularly the Corsa models.
If anyone else has found their way here searching for an answer to this problem , this here is a permanent fix , and much better than Vauxhalls own plastic link rod.
I got one myself and think I wont ever be having this problem again.

Hope this helps some of you with the same issues.

Wifey complained of this on her 1995 1.4 sport (C14SE) so I fitted one of the metal link rods and it did reduce slop a bit but induced a vibration at 3,000rpm+, so fitted rubber collars under the rods ball joints, cured that.
Found a lot of side play in the pivot so removed the gear shift lever, (just flip the locking pin catch and pull it out), undo the four bolts hold assembly to floor, disconnect the rod from linkage under car and remove whole unit past handbrake, it's a bit tight. Ease a side bung out of the pivot, (not easy), insert a small washer in each cap and reassemble with some grease, this takes all the side play out.
Replace the rubber O ring on the gear stick where it sits in the cup, big cause of sloppyness, reassemble by locking gearbox link at input shaft, replacing the assembly and locking the gear lever in position with the alignment holes and tighten link bolt under car..
You will find it 100% better.
