Hope you guys can help. My girlfriends car recently went in for MOT and had a new CAT and I asked the fella to change the oil and air filter etc.
Since then the car sometimes has a very very loud rattle coming from cambelt end of engine. Could be a follower but its very rapid even at idle and so loud you can hear it inside another car when driving !! it comes and goes too, but seems to show after the motor has sat for a half hour or so. The garage bloke just said use it for scrappage!!!!!! Help :? 1.4 LS Hi Torq 16v

well first thing id do is check if anything seems lose in the engine bay, worthwhile checking the cambelt cover id say, if this is lose it will rattle like a bitch!
since you say its started since your oil change i think he probably hasnt put enough in, or used the wrong viscocity, check the oil level and check for any leaks like round the oil filter, and the sump nut.

sadly its never good news if a mechanic says to scrap it in, he obviosly thinks it might cost a bit to fix, that said he could just be lazy and unwilling to spend the time on it!

Firstly...double check the oil level and that he has actually done the work.

Never take mechanics word for it they've done the work. Like most trades, there are a fair number of really decent mechanics that really know their stuff, but equally there are a fair number of cowboys around.

As octance said, check the obvious stuff first, covers etc.

i have come across this quite often and its usually the air filter housing thats causing the rattle/knocking noise, as its not sitting correctly, but like its said above, just check everything
