2 problems??!!

Hi,
I've got a 1999 1.2 sxi corsa. The first problem I've got started last year, when I travel at any speed over 35/40mph I lose power (not completely) feels like someone is braking and then the engine management like comes on. Took it to a guy who put it on a diagnostic thing and he said that the fault was the lamba sensor. I replaced that but it made no difference at all. Due to not working at the moment, I'm completely skint, so I've not been able to take it back to the guy who tested it for me.
Now I've also got a problem that when I start the car, it won't accelerate until it completely warms up. If I try to drive it jumps and makes popping noises (I presume this is backfiring). I can completely floor the accelerator, but there is nothing at all, and then all of a sudden it just goes. Still a bit jerky until it gets really warmed up, but it goes. I'm not that up on cars, I just know the basics, checking oil and water, can change air filter lol when i help my dad to service it.
Anyway, when it eventually warms up it drives ok most of the time, but will intermittently lose power when pulling off at junctions, which is not good!
I've been looking round the forum and a lot of posts said to replace the spark plugs, which is what I intended to do first. My dad looked at the spark plugs but says they look ok??!! Can there be a problem with spark plugs thats not obvious until they are changed? Think my dad is a bit uncertain because of the amount of electrics on the car, he is ok on anything thats not got EMS!
Could these faults be the part of the same problem or 2 different things
Any ideas?? I need to try to sort this out as quickly and cheaply as I can, IF possible!!
Thanks for reading, and hope someone can help.
