clutch pedal spring Ahhh!!

Just replaced the clutch pedal on my corsa b becuase one of the little plastic hooks had snapped - the ones which hold the end of the clutch cable in place.

I removed the pedal and its housing - replaced the pedal it self (with one from ebay) but I can't remember how the clutch pedal spring should attach.

I think one end of the spring which is slightly hooked goes into the plastic bit of the pedal cos theres a hole (besides the hooks) - but not sure about the other end of the spring.

Now that reconnected everything the clutch pedal is sitting about an inch above the brakes pedal even when disconnected from the clutch cable

I think the spring may not be positioned correctly (has too much tension on it) - as I say i've attached one end to the clutch pedal and the other straight end is wedged against the housing.

does the clutch operate normaly?
a correctly adjusted clutch peadle should always sit higer than the brake, if the two peadles are level, usualy your clutch cable needs tightning up

i cant say without seeing your car but if your clutch peadle is higer than your brake it should be fine.

The clutch pedal spring is designed to push the pedal to the floor - so if no cable is attached the pedal will stay on the floor.

I assumed that it forced the pedal off the floor once you had taken your foot off of the clutch - so fitted the spring the wrong way around.

So problem solved, however.....

The way Vauxhall have designed the pedal housing is that if the clutch cable snaps then the tension of the spring, the extra force of the cable snapping results in the pedal hitting the top of the pedal housing at force. This results in the plastic clutch cable locating tang (at the end of the pedal) breaking off.

My neibours got the same year corsa as mine but Vauxhall must have redesigned the housing to prevent this problem.
