ECU swap

My '95 1.2 Corsa needs a new ECU (according to the garage)...I know many other things can cause similar problems, but let's just assume I've tried them all 
My question is, can I just straight swap the ECU, with another one from a scrapyard or the internet or whatever? Or will I need to change all the bits along with it (transponders, keys etc.)? If that's the case, it might prove too expensive to be worthwhile, especially when I'm not convinced it'll fix it...
