Air Filter

Hey guys,
The standard air filter in my 1.0 1998 corsa has been rattling about for a few weeks so I fitted an old pipercross foam one for now that I had lying about from an old car, the engine management light stays on because that little sensor plug thing that was connected to the old box hasn't got anywhere to go, which I was expecting, just wanted to know will it do any damage with the plug out constantly? I've heard things about MAF sensors going and having starting problems and obviously I don't want any of that happening.
