1,2,3...go....well, it tries to!

I am having problems with my 1.2 (X reg) Corsa B (with X12XE engine as far as I can tell). The main issue being sluggish performance when moving off from stationary (at lights/junctions etc). The car seems to want to go then hits a "flat spot" and crawls for a few moments before jumping back to life. Applying more power or easing on and off the acceleator ("feathering"???) neither seem to achieve anything. The only time I have had a warning light appear was 2 days ago driving up a steep hill in 2nd, when the EML appeared briefly on and off.
I have read numerous forums regarding the frequent failure of the MAF sensor. Would this be another case of the not so deadly but irritating MAF? Or is it likely to be a coil pack? Or something altogether more contagious?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
