**NEWBIE** WITH CORSA GLS PROBLEM - CLEAN OR REPLACE EGR VAL

Hello everyone,

It’s good to be part of this forum. I bought a 1994 M Reg Vauxhall Corsa GLS 5dr Auto 1.4 Petrol about 3 weeks ago. Only done 55000 miles! All previous MOT's dating back to September 1997, as well as the full Owners Pack and x2 keys. The car only had 2 previous lady owners of same family from new for 16 years! Totally original. Cost me £150 with only 5 days MOT and 2 months TAX, good deal huh?

Whilst inspecting the car, the lady owner told me she had topped up the oil and upon checking the dipstick, I noticed that she had obviously put far too much oil in as the line was way above the max mark on the dipstick. It blowed alot of smoke and oil from the exhaust. You could clearly see oil in the exhaust, that new/fresh oil.

I drove back home on in it in the dark, about 50 miles. Car cutted out as I was coming onto the slipway off the main dual carriageway. The engine management light permanently illuminated, but there was now erratic idling and car misfiring.

I'd taken the car to a nearby garage next day, which ran a diagnostic check and detected an error code '47 Linear Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) position. There answer was that the EGR valve needs cleaning or replacing. The garage quoted me £150 for replacing the EGR valve and diagnostic fee. I told the mechanic to clean the EGR valve and see what happens and to call me. I left my car with the garage. Four days later, no phone call, so decided to make a visit to the garage. As I turned the corner to go up the slope, the car was still left parked outside as I left it and the car never been worked on!

By this time, I ran out of my patience with this garage. The EGR valve needs looking at and my car has no MOT. I took the car to a certain garage, about 20 miles, and put it through MOT as it is. An hour later I get a phone call that they done the emissions test and the MOT, and both passed with no advisories!!

The MOT bloke recommended me to use Redex, a fuel system cleaner. I'm putting it in now every time I fill up and the car is running very smooth. The idle is smooth and no more misfiring. The MPG is good and the drive and power is good.

The next day, I drove to a hand car wash and did a full valet and they did a good job too, they charged £30. Car now looks **MINT**

Just washed the car this morning. Using my mobile phone, I took a few photos for you to look at...

Have done only 160 miles, driving mainly done on dual carriage ways, since MOT and with no problems. Now just wondering whether or not to clean or replace the EGR valve? Or just leave it as it is? Please advise...

What model is it? It has a 'Si' badge on the tailgate, and 'GLS' badges on both sides. Is it an 8v or 16v? It also has power steering, front electric heated wing mirrors, central locking, really nice looking and comfortable seats and an Ecotec engine. No rev counter/sunroof.

How do I go about replacing the corsa roof aerial? Not sure if aerial works. Car has no Stereo or CD Player. Please advise... Thank you.

nice looking car for a 5 door. 1. just clean the egr valve but mind renew the gasket. 2. its a gls the si just means single injection. its a 16v you can tell by how big the engine cover is. in your case its big and if you looked at a 8v it wont have a cover just a rocker cover and itl be half the size of the 16v obv lol and the ecotec is only 16v aswell. you can change the insturment cluster to have a rev counter. its really easy. and ive never changed the aeriel on mine yet but says in haynes manual you have to take the roof lining off and take the nut off for the aeriel and itl just come out. hope this helps

Hi there! I've recently joined the forum and liking the information here. From the looks of that egr valve, it would be better to replace it if you're willing to spend but you can still clean it if you don't want to spend some money. I found this thread http://forums.corsa-b.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=13605 where it has a detailed instructions on how to clean it. :)
