Re: thermostat opening temp
Yeah its usually around 80 degrees for a thermostat to half open on most engines, Depending on the age of your car and mileage etc you could need a new thermostat or try flushing your cooling system out, there could be dirt/grit blocking your thermostat at half open.

Hey,
Similar question so I thought I'd add it on here. Dads got a 1.8 Astra, we thought the temp gauge was broken as it didn't seem to move even during a ten mile journey, but the other day we noticed that after about fifteen mins it crawls upto the lower end of the normal operating temp bracket before thermostat opens and it crawls right down the the rest peg. Clearly thermo is opening too much but what action do you think needs to be taken? New one?

Re: thermostat opening temp
sounds like the stat has failed mate a lot of them are designed to fail in the open position would explain why the temp gauge is suddenly acting different.
