my let starts up , runs for a while then cuts out, runs like it has a misfire. i took the plugs out and they were covered in petrol/soot ,cleaned them and put them back in and its done the same again

sounds like it could be an immobiliser problem, and the misfire is caused by fuel being cut off. Might be worth a look into it.
