Steering tooooo far!

hey guys,
Had a accident over xmas (damn black ice) which has messed my steering up quite alot, had to replace the wheel on the passenger side as the knock against the kerb made a bit of a mess of it!
Garage had a look and said tracking was completely off the scale and they had sorted it that so GREAT!
Butttt when i got it home i noticed that when i go full lock (both ways) the passenger side wheel turns way to far, it doesnt stop where is should, it only stops turning by hitting against parts of the steering system (sorry dont know names of parts) and the steering wheel doesn't go back to center, can just drive around and around with no hands, (only rite full lock tho, left self centers)
Been told its probably the steering rack that's gone, so was planing on getting one and having my mate fit it for me but i dont want to shell out on a rack if its not that thats the problem!
Soooo could anybody suggest anything else it could be? any help would be greatly appreciated!
