Steering Rack required - help

Hi all,

Just had my 1999 1.0l Corsa in for its MOT, which it sadly failed. This wasnt really a shoch as i new of a few thing that needed done but want to make sure the emissions passed before doing the work. Anyway it passed the emissions test no problems but failed due to play in the steering, which i have been told requires a new rack.

I can pick up a 2nd hand rack for cheap enough, but im a bit confused as to whether i need a EPS one or a manual one. I was pretty sure it needed a EPS one until i read that if it was power steering the 'EPS' light would go on when the ignition was started. My car however has no such light so im a bit confused.

Could anyone enlighten me as to which part i require. Also can anyone forsee any problem with buying one from a breakers yard if the part has been checked and sold with a few months warrenty?

Cheers for any help.

Rob.

firstly does your car have power steering? if yes it will either be hydrolic or electric. if its hydrolic you will have a little black resevour i think it will be in the engine bay to the right hand side at the front. if you dont have that it will be electric.

90% of members on here use second hand parts where possible most scrapyards are pritty good if u bring them back cause there faulty but always ask b4 u buy

Hi,

Sorry for being a complete idiot. I am 90% sure the car has an Electric Power Steering system. However doubt has been put in my mind as i can find no sign of the 'EPS' light on the dash, it certainly doesnt light up when the ignition is on. If there was power steering would there definately be a light on the dash?

Is there a way to determine for sure if it has EPS? For example if i sit in the car and turn the wheel without the ignition on and then do the same with the ignition on will there be significently noticable difference that even i could detect?

Sorry again for my lack of knowledge, but i would rather come across as an idiot and get the right part than feign knowledge that isnt there and end up with the wrong one. Maybe that shows a little bit of wisdom and im not a lost cause after all

Thanks for any insight offered.
Rob.
