Bad MAF sensor? Please help!

Hi There, this is my first post on the forum. I'm not usually one for posting on forums as I can usually find the answer just by doing a little searching around, however this seems to be a strange problem.
My problem is with my Corsa 1999 16v. It idles erratically, the revs shoot up when trying to change gear, and it's very jerky when you're traveling in low speeds and bring your foot off the throttle.
I know you're all going to say, clean the throttle body, or idle control valve, or the EGR valve. I've taken the throttle body and give it a bloody good clean and lube up, this fixed it for about 10 mins! However, recently, I've just been putting up with it but it's really taking the piss now. When it comes to traffic lights, the cars next to me think I want to race!
Last night, I disconnected the MAF, and all my problems were solved! It did idle a bit rough, but generally was good. Didn't rev it's self, revs didn't shoot up changing gear and it wasn't jerky any more! This might be obvious to most people, but... is it a bad MAF? From what I understand with MAFs is when they go bad, they usually get dirty and if anything they give you low rough idle revs, spitting at the exhaust etc... Anyway I cleaned it (although it didn't need it) and connected it again this morning - no difference still playing up. Disconnected it and it ran fine. So is this an obvious symptom of a bad MAF? Or is the car just running in 'get me home' mode? I don't want to buy a new/used one, if disconnecting the MAF is just masking another problem.
Has anyone else ever experienced the same sort of issues? And what solved it?
Cheers,
Any help much appreciated!
Stephen
