Very annoying starting problems - 1998 1.0 12v!
Hey guys,
Right, going to describe this as best as i can!
In a morning, especially cold, damp mornings - my car starts fine (every time)....my revs go to 1200rpm which presumably is quite normal for morning starts....I leave her In Neautral and give her a rev and it hits a brick wall at 2500-3000 RPM... The throttle feels very unresponsive and it will not rev past 3k!! So... I keep revving... (getting a very low, deep noise from the engine) Then all of a sudden the revs shoot up to 4 k and Stay there... With my foot off the throttle...EML illuminates and I have to turn the engine off, restart, few
More revs and all of a Sudden the revs shoot up(like something's come un-stuck!) and it will drive brilliantly all day like there isnt a problem!
Recently I have had a new MAF, changes plugs, changed air filter, new crankshaft sensor, cleaned throttle butterfly valve.
It's only in a morning or if the car has been stood for a very long time and given time to go completely cold...but as I said, as soon as it decides to rev it drives beautifully!
I would seriously appreciate any help to get this fixed as I am bothered one day it won't rev at all a d leave me stuck!
Thanks in advance!!!
Mark.

Firstly if it brings up an eml then I would suggest taking a trip down local garage and get it on the diagnostics. Could be just a sensor.
Then again our 1.0 envoy had problems revving by itself etc... It turned out to be a faulty ecu. Can get them pretty cheap off flebay.
Random guessing here but thinking tps or icv?

Why would it be causing this from a faulty ECU though? Hmmm... Advice from a mechanic and he said it's very unlikely to be icv... What's the otter thing you said?
Thanks alot mate!

I have a corsa 1.0 envoy aswell,, and i have been getting the same, also just out of curiosity whats the fastest you get out of yours? mine is a crappy 85, and i went to garage and got told firstly clean the ICV, and theres a good easy guide one here how to do it, apparently there can be a build up of grit on the cogs inside the valve, you just clean them with carb cleaner WD40 and a toothbrush, or small bit of wet and dry, and for the EGR valve(emission gas recycling) you apparently do the same and just clean up and loob well!
I guess i will find out 2mora if i have time after work!!

Yeah I heard that too but i was told that you can't clean the icv on this mod as it's a sealed unit?? Or have I been told wrong? Its the most annoying problem though... Really need to sort it as I feel like it's just going to give up on me one morning!! You going to clean yours tomorrow then? Ermm with regards to speed of I'm honest I haven't really tried... But yeah that sounds abought right as there isn't really much acceleration at 70 in 5th. It might get to 90mph, by the time I'm 50 lol. love my car though.. Just want this problem sorted! Have you any idea how to clean/get to these two valves then?

The Idle control valve has something like 7 clips going around it if I remember right or close to it. You can pry them up with a screwdriver to open the unit the design of them will probably mean a few will snap while your doing it but it doesn't really matter. I also believe there is a guide on these forums about cleaning it think I have a link hold on.........
http://www.allcorsa.co.uk/forums/showth ... 26190.html
There ya go very good guide on how to.......hope this helps and good luck

Yeah the idle control valve you can do, doenst seem to hard, jst remove the air intake and undo a couple of borts, and then as gav said, just pry it open the guide on here seems easy enough, so will try that, but after reading more on other forums and speeking to couple mates am not going to do the EGR, you either need a new gasket plate or a blanking plate before you start! so am guna nip by my mates garage 2day and speek to his boss and see what he recommends, he is bound to no about it since its a common thing on corsa's.. And after re reading the guide on here it actually says on not to start unless you have either lol..
Will let you no how i get on 2night!:)

Re: Very annoying starting problems - 1998 1.0 12v!
got given a half day at work so decided to give it a go!
took it out, 2 of the bolts abit orqward to get at! but done with in no time, disconnect the coolant and 2 electrical connects, took it off and left it to soak in some carb cleaner, for a good couple hours, then drained it off, and scrubbed like mad with a toothbrush (old one) lol and then in warm rinsed off in some cold water..
I WOULD recommend you get a new gasket for it, only £2.69 from the vauxhaull dealer, because the old one abit bent and poo, so best for new one, i then reassembled it together, and filled back up with coolant, and started my engine, first off it started and cut out! got a bit scared lol.
Then re started and aload of white smoke came out exhaust, then it died down, so decided to take it for a drive! white smoke for a about 5mins, not sure why, but then after that it was, fine!
So decided to pull over on an empty longish road, and floored it, 1st fine 2nd fine, and 3rd (where normally loose the power wen put foot down) it was great!! and same with 4th and 5th, i reckon if road was longer it would have gone faster than my previous top speed of 82mph lol, i recommend any1 having same problems as me, try it you will be surprised with the result!
THANK YOU FORUM GUIDE FOR YOUR HELP! also for people thinking about blocking them off yeh its fine to do so, but you will need to go to vauxhall to get the car remapped or your engine management light will stay on because it will detect nothing is going through the pipe.

Re: Very annoying starting problems - 1998 1.0 12v!
heyyy sorry for the late reply i had a heavy weekend, with all this lovely weather and been at bbqs and partys lol, and forgot about getting pics for you but got them now!
Sorry about the paint am not the best on it, lol
but its simple enought undo the 4 torx bolts, you will need the extention on to get to the to underneath, unclip the 2 electrical connections, and then simply get a pair of grips on the clip and then pull it back and leave it on the hose, and all the coolant should drain off, once you have left it in the carb cleaner for a couple hours clean in cold water and then clean out with tooth brush, and to get right in corners i used a tooth pic lol, but yeah have a go!
