adjusting tappets?

now then people, hope someone can give me a bit of advice, my girlfriend has a 97 corsa b 1.2 trip and i was told by a mate of mine that the tappets are making a bit of noise, is it possible to adjust them or is it something that needs to be replaced? cheers peeps
