Gearbox problem

Hi everyone
I have a 1999 Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 GLS, had it since November.
I pulled up outside my house tonight, wanted to get a bit closer to the kerb so put it in reverse.....and the gearknob went completely loose....no other way to describe it, I could move it up and down and side to side, when I shouldn't have been able to!! I didn't know what to do, so I kept my foot on the clutch and turned off the engine. I moved the gearknob about, and it suddenly went back into neutral. It went into first, second etc absolutely fine, but then when I selected reverse, the same thing happened again, it went all loose, like it wasn't connected to anything, after wiggling it about it then went back into neutral.
This is my first car, and in all honesty I am clueless about motors!! Does anyone know what the cause of this is? I'm guessing its going to need to go to the garage? If thats the case, what sort of price am I looking at???

do you mean it goes into all other gears ok except reverse?? if so it could be a simple case of re ajusting the clutch cable

I've driven the car a couple of times today no problems, it was literally when I got home a couple of hours ago that this happened. It seems to go into the other gears fine, it is just reverse. I've not been out in it since, I've just sat in it trying out the gears and it does seem to be only reverse that is the problem. Sorry I'm not very technical, its hard to explain!
It had a new clutch cable fitted a few weeks ago. So do you think its something simple? I've got the boyfriend coming out to take a look but might not be for a few days so I just want to get an idea of whether its going to be an easy fix.

Well I got back in the car this morning to show my mum the problem, started the engine, put the clutch down and went through the gears no problem, put it in reverse......no problem!!! Put it in reverse a second time and the problem came back, it wasn't in gear and I could wobble the gearstick up and down all over the place. It wouldn't go back into neutral, and wouldn't go into any of the other gears either!! Its completely screwed. I lifted the clutch and the engine stalled, so it must be stuck in a gear somewhere but god knows what.
I just want to get it fixed so I can sell it, I am completely fed up of this car......anyone want to buy a corsa...???? lol

Soo...its a problem with the gear linkage....the bush/pin thing holding it together has gone....worn away or fallen off I don't know.
Apparantly Vauxhall don't sell them, I have to have a whole new gear linkage, which is quite pricey. I've scoured the internet to try and find some kind of repair kit but they don't seem to exist for the corsa b

Cheers for your help Gav, but the problem I've got is that they are just the metal gear linkages and don't come with the bushes needed. The actual gear linkage I've got is fine, I just need the bush/pin thing to hold it together, and it looks like you can't buy them separately (unlike the corsa c)

The bottom link looked like it might still have the pin there but other than that all I can suggest is Scrap yard if it's hard to source not like there isn't tons of corsa b's sitting in scrappy's up and down the country.
