hey guys on my way to the gym the other day my corsa of nearly 2 years cut out , was kinda like the battery had died but upon opening the bonnet and being hit with smoke and the wires on my battery bubbling i knew this problem was bigger , so far i think its the starter motor thats caused it basically the 2 wires ( the brown and black ones ) from the batter are melted as far down as they go in the car what i was wondering is would i have to replace the full loom or is it true that these wires are on a seperate loom ive herd this but dont know if its a rumour or not ? also is it worth even fixing ?

my cars a w plate 1.0 12v
so its the x10xe engine anyone who could shed light would be a great help

right sorry to bump this thread but i do need anykind of help , ive replace the loom i need and tested the starter which i think is knackered so ive ordered a new one and just need to stick it in however ive read that the ignition switch may have cause this ? so i took the shrouding of and had a look but dont know how to get the switch off or even what to look at but anyways being safe i ordered a new one but what i need to know is would i need a whole new barrel aswell ?

It's very unlikely to be the ignition switch. To cause that sort of melt down you would need a very heavy discharge as in a dead short on the positive lead to ground, either a cut touching the chassis or the starter or alternator shorting out inside, (Often due to over tighting the connecting terminal and twisting the insulating block inside) but this would show up as a none starting motor.

hey sorry it turns out it was the ignition switch but you are correct in some ways , basically the ignition switch jams on and leaves a constant feed to the starter the starter gets red hot and melts the insulation on the positive wire and because its on the same loom as you said it melts into the ground wire and bam thats what happens ! ive replaced the starter as i was done in and all the wires and got her running again however i have more problems with the headlights now
