Throttle Body

Post by Brown93 »

Hello
My little 1.2 is struggling these days and has a minor misfire. When you put your foot on the throttle it hesitates badly then picks up in a sluggish manor. I think i will start with the throttle body and clean that. Has anybody ever done one, are they a pig to do and is there anything I need to watch out for. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Dan

I've got a 1.0 and had a similar problem, also couldn't get over 60 on the motorways! Disconnect the pipe linking your air box to the throttle body. There are a few silver circlips that pop off. If the engine is similar, the throttle body cover should be a black plastic, and in the centre top of your engine bay, on top of this there should be 3 star shaped bolts which need removing, i used a socket kit and it was simple! Pull this off and voila! there is your throttle body!

The throttle body should be closed, a simple way to open it is to either move a small plastic half wheel connected to a wire to the right, or get someone to lightly rev the engine, and the body should open.

Spray some carb cleaner all around the body and down inside it. I used a whole can as mine was full of oil. Leave it for 20-30 mins to do it's business and break down the poo, then astart the engine, mine took a while to start and needed revving slightly as it wouldn't actually start at first. I noticed it took a few times and steady revs, don't be alarmed if you see a small amount of smoke or steam, this is just the cleaner being evaporated!

Ever since i did this my cars run great, i actually did it in 3 or 4 goes and left the car for half a day, seems to have completely cleaned out all the gunk in there. Hope this helps.

good advice mate my plan is to remove the hole thing then scrub the bitch with brake cleaner sadly i need the car for monday and the great british weather jumped in and stopped me from doing this today. I know on the 12v corsas and the newer ones the throttle body is a common fault so good place to start

Give it a go man, it might be your idle control valve, which should be if it's the same as mine, just in front of your throttle body. It can unclip/ unscrew and is supposedly (once broken) unfixable and very expensive to replace. However it can be cleaned. Search for corsa b cleaning idle control valve and theres a few tutorials :)
