Post by thegreenmachine »

Im currently running one amp to 1 subwoofer but is there anyway i could hook another amp up without needing another power cable from the battery?

as long as the existing cable from the battery can take the extra power you can just connect it up off of that too.

yeah, splice it in.
Youd be better off with 2 wires i think

either splice it or you could make up a second wire just to go between amplifiers, and depending on what kind of powers you are running (if it's particularly high) you'd be better off with two but if not one with a little piggy back wire should be fine

600w/12v= about 50 amps, if you add to that you need to know what the wire can handle

power is equal to voltage multiplied by current
so 12v multiplied by the current must = 600w
so re arranged becomes 600w divided by 12v = 50 amps
so at peak power your current amplifier (600w) draws 50 amps
so you need to do the same calculation for the amp you intend to add, add the currents up and check that it doesn't exceed the rated maximum for the wire you have already

so if the new amp was 300w then 300w/12v = 25
so 50A + 25A = 75A
if your wire and fuse can handle this power then add it in
if not then you need to add a second wire

well the wire should have a fuse fitted to it somewhere (for it not to have one is dangerous, trust me when those batteries get badly shorted they can explode and i promise you you will never poo yourself so much in your life) so you should look for the fuse and it should have a rating written on it somewhere, and have a look at the amp as it should have a fuse fitted in it too, it's usually higher than the actual power but seeing as you don't know it's safter to just add that to the 50 from the new one.

if that 50 + the fuse in the old one is bigger than the fuse thats there you need to put in a second wire. DO NOT change the fuse for a bigger one as you do not know what the wire can handle. it's not worth the risk of a wire fire

I've just kind of accidentally end up with 2 amps now aha!
A 400w kenwood and a piddly little 80w Mutant amp
So i'm gonna run the kenwood to my kenwood sub and the mutants to my parcel shelf speakers

Well i'm not gonna bother with the mutant 80w amp anymore because my kenwood stereo has a 50w amp in it anyway so it will hardly make a difference

Just gonna run the 400w kenwood
