Burning Oil

Hi everyone,
So my corsa has been puffing out white smoke a bit recently, we thought it was just condensation - but apparently not.
We were driving today, and the smoke was really bad - like a cloud following us, probably causing a hazzard! It worried us so we Pulled in when we could and called the AA. AA man looked and checked the oil, which was apparently low - it was topped up recently, so that was concerning.
The AA guy revved the engine and said the smoke smells, like oil - the engine must be burning it.
So, it could be the piston rings?
Does anyone know how much this would be to repair, how much should i expect a local garage to do the work?
Cheers
