Idle Control Valve

The idle control valve on my 1.2 GLS is behaving in a peculiar way.
the sprung pin that adjusts the throttle cable goes in and out rapidly making a chattering sound (very much like a tappet sound) that can be heard from inside the car.
Is this a case of changing the idle control valve or could it be something else?
