Aerial problems

Ok I'm pretty good at most electrical stuff and have managed to install a full I.C.E system
Into my B, but there would appear to be a problem with the aerial.
With the old head unit it was pretty clear but since I installed the new one it's signal has dropped a hell of a lot, I think it could be from when a friend was pullin cables through from behind the dash he did say he had to pull the aerial lead out of the way to pull the RCA's for the amp's through and I assume he has pulled it a little too hard and maybe stretched the lead too much.
So my problem now is how do I replace the aerial lead?? I know there is a joint in the passenger footwell but where do I get a new lead from or can I just run another lead alongside the old? I was also thinking of changing the aerial itself for a sharks fin style one, is it a matter if unscrew the old one an rescrew the new one in place.
I know it's a bit long winded but if you don't ask you never find out..
Cheers all
