the timing belt snapped on daughters 1994 1.4 8v while she was trying to start it , im going to try and fit a new belt myself. With regard to timing I intened to set crank to tdc by removing plug from piston 1 and then adjust cam to mark on cover.Am i right in thinking thats all thats required with regard to timing.
Any thing else I need to look out for,

yepp thats all you need to do with an 8v. theirs marks on everything anyway so just make sure its all lined up are you sure she hasnt bent any valves?? might be worth buying a compression tester and trying it out.

no idea about valves , just going to fit belt and cross fingers ! I presume you tension the belt by adjusting the water pump?
been trying to find a how to guide but no joy :(

If its snapped on startup I reckon you have got away without bending any valves or causing any other related damage

right , have just spent the last few hours trying to do the job but up to now have only managed to remove most of the skin from my knuckles and shared a few expletives with the neighbours !
How do you hold the allternator belt pulley so you can remove the nut , to remove the pulley and then remove the plastic guard to get to the belt.
I have tried everything to hold the pulley so i can loosen the nut but cannot get anything to grip the pulley and theres nothing you can lever against to try and hold it

managed to do it , ratchet long bar against engine mount and turn engine over on starter. Worked a treat , rest took me about 10 minutes and car started 1st time and runs fine.
