Okay, here's the story. I bought the car about a month ago and i noticed whenever i'd go above 40mph the engine light would come on and the car would lose power if i didn't let off the gas for a couple of seconds. I looked online and all sources indicated to a faulty Mass Air Sensor.

Last week i was coming off the M25 (50mph) and when i came up to the roundabout my car just cutout. All the lights came on, EPS,Engine,Battery,Oil and my engine died. And it wouldn't start up again for 10 mins. So the RAC recommended taking it to the garage to get it scanned, so we did. and there were 2 codes, 1 for the mass air filter and 2, for the oxygen sensor.

So i replaced the MAF a couple of days ago. and the oxygen sensor today. and after about 15 mins of inconsistent idling (it will idle, then occasionally drop in revs for a sec) it cutout again! Getting really bummed out because this is my first car and 1 month in i'm already spending so much money on fixing it.

If anyone has any idea what's causing this, I would appreciate it immensly! Thanks!!

anyone interested - took it to a garage, they scanned it and they said my crankshaft sensor was faulty. £45 for a new 1 and £50 for labour.

yea was gona say sounds like a crankshaft sensor i replaced mine myself for £21

50 dabs labour..................ouch would vote crank sensor first off because of the non starting and other it would generally start up but run like a bag of spanners

i changed the part in the dark on a cold frosty night. it was the first time i was ever under a car. as it was my 1st time i felt the risk of "what if the car slips" but i picked up my stones and done it. keeping in mind the crank sensor is in a hard to reach spot and i had to use my left hand to do all the work. the part itself was after market only cost me £21 and it fixed the issure straight away. Garage will charge an arm and a leg becuase they asume you dont know how to fix it.

it's all easy stuff It would be nice to do ten of them a day for 50 a peice! But we all know it will never happen

Took it from garage today, thought all was well. Went to fill up, when i starting my engine again, it struggled to hold idle and died. Started it again - to put my foot down to keep revs up then i just quickly went into 1st and drove off (not in the mood to breakdown at a petrol station). Back to garage 2moro... £122 down the drain and it feels like i'm back to square one. *sigh*

been told they've checked and everything seems to be okay except the egr valve. instead of letting 100% air it's letting in 80% so they're gonna replace that. £86 for a new valve and £60 for labour, with vat total £179... There goes my next paycheck (I'm a fulltime student working part time).

Bloody hell with the money you have spent if your not too clued up about cars you could have bought a Haynes manual off eBay for peanuts a cheap tool kit and the parts from the scrap yard for 15-20 quid for the both you have had and still had your pay check!

that price for the EGR seems fair. a new one for my 1.2 16v would cost a good £100 for the part, then £2 for a gasket.
all that holds it in place is 4 bolts on the face of it, and 2 bolts holding a pipe at the back. with a decent ratchet tool and an extended bar attchment you could fit it in about 1 hour ( thats giving a ton of time for first timer ) if you do your homework, buy a Haynes manual, do more studying, then take your time with some decent tools and buy some Penetrate spray for rusty bolts and WD40 you should be fine. The joy of buying the part cheap and fiting it yourself and finding out how easy the stuff is to do, and how much you saved from going to a garage and have them rip you off in labour costs. At the end of it you can feel happy knowing " I DID THAT MYSELF !"

But the thing is, the first problem I had with the car was the all too common MAF. Bought that part myself on ebay, bought security bit set, looked at youtube tutorials, did it myself in 30 mins. THen the Oxygen sensor needed replacing, same thing, bought it on vauxhall website for cheap, youtube tutorial, did it myself. Then the cutting out problem started. All signed pointed towards Crankshaft sensor. but A) I was getting tired/broke of just guessing problems. B) To reach the crankshaft you have to get underneath your car, i don't have a ramp Even though £179 is a lot, i feel i paid for peace of mind, because the guy told me they did engine tests and there's nothing wrong that came up. So nothing SERIOUSLY wrong with the car. and also, they spent the whole day trying to figure out what was wrong, before they found the faulty EGR valve. So in those respects, hopefully nothing else will go wrong because i've basically had a check up.
