Hi. 2000 1.0 12v. I've had it for nearly 2 years and has run faultlessly. Today, about 10 miles into a journey whilst driving at about 45mph it briefly cut out then picked up again. A couple of miles later stopped at a junction and it died. Wouldn't start. No problems turning it over but wouldn't fire up. After about 10 minutes tried again and it started no trouble and ran fine for another 3 miles or so, no lights showing, all normal. Stopped again at a junction and died again. Same thing, wouldn't start but about 10 minutes later it fired up and ran fine for another couple of miles then same again. Eventually got home. (apologies to anyone that I held up by being in the way).
Anyway, now wondering what the likely cause is. As there were no engine management lights showing I'm guessing that all the usual MAF sensors etc and EGR should be okay. Can these go without showing the light? Reading other posts the crankshaft sensor may be the culprit as others have suggested it can work when cooled down but cut out when hot. Would this show an engine management light?
Any other ideas? Would be good if I can fix it tonight, even if just a temp measure as I'm starting a new job tomorrow and can only get there by car!
1.0 has started cutting out - any suggestions

Hello,
has it been raining where you are?? if so check your ignition components for dampness or damage.
when was the spark plugs and leads last changed?
is there a fuel blockage, change fuel filter?
difficult to start when engine is at temperature? when was the air filter last changed it could be clogged.
other than that it could be a sensor like you earlier said but my friends 1.0 had the EGR Idle valve and Crank sensor replaced and the engine management light was on all the time. but anyway just check those few items and let me know how you get on
All the best
Nick

Plenty of rain recently but fine on the day it conked out! Plugs checked and fine. No ignition leads as such as it has a coil pack so only LT (fine). Fuelling seems fine.
I've now replaced the crankshaft position sensor and it seems to be working again but have only done short journeys (only about 4-5 miles) since. I left it idling for about half an hour though and warmed up hot enough to trigger the electric fan but no issues (was previously cutting out before it got hot enough to run the fan). Longer trip tomorrow so hopefully that will prove it is fixed...

Definitely seems to be fixed. So, if you are having problems with the engine cutting out but only when the engine is warm and it starts again no problem when it has cooled down again then a good starting point is to change the Crankshaft position sensor.

One month on the problems have returned. Similar issues but doesn't seem to be so temperature dependant, just an intermittent cutting out and seems to start again almost straight away.
Thinking maybe the crankshaft sensor I bought is duff (wasn't a genuine part) - anyone else had early failures of these?
Alternatively it could be the cable or connector as it was a bit tight to get off/put back on so I'll check that too.
Or, it might be something completely different so I need to diagnose before buying any more parts.
Can anyone recommend a code reader/OBD tool that works with a Feb 2000 X10XE?
