How to: Wire GSI fog lights with GM switch
After doing a lot of searching around the internet wondering how to wire up my fog lights I came across lots of guides but they were all different! So what I have done here is taken parts from different guides and created my own simple guide with step by step instructions! Big thanks to the guys on corsa-b for the help!
Tools:
Side cutters
Few different screwdrivers (flat, Philips, torx)
Crimping tool (or pliers) [Can use solder and shrink wrap]
Wire strippers
Materials:
Fog light wiring kit (cheap one off eBay MUST have a 30a relay)
GM switch (front or rear GM switch)
GSI fog light connectors or side light connectors
Extra wire (anything that can take 12v)
A few self tapping screws (any size)
Spade crimps
Fork or ring crimps
cable ties
1st step:
Disconnect the negative side off your battery!
2nd step:
First I started off by taking the fuse cover off to expose the screws for the trim where all the light switches are. After that you remove the trim by pushing the vent down to show two more screws then remove all 4 screws that hold it in place. Once this has been done gently pull it off to expose all of the wiring behind.
Now you should take off the ashtray to give move room to run the cables behind it. There are 4 screws holding this in place.
After you have done that you need to take the glove box out so you can get access to the large grommet that goes from the car into the engine bay.
3rd step:
Now you should extend the wires on the connectors or loom so they will reach the point where you are going to mount the relay. If you are using the side light connectors the solid colour wire is the ground and the 2 colour wire is the positive. Once you have done this plug the connectors into the fog lights on the bumper (you can take the bumper off to give you more room or you can reach from above or below). Once they are connected put your bumper back on and feed the cables through the engine bay to the point where you are mounting the relay.
Next you need to run 1 cable into the car from the engine bay that will go to your switch and one wire from the positive side of the battery to your relay (this must have an inline fuse!).
4th step:
Once you are happy with where you are mounting your relay and got all of the wires to it, you then need to mount it! I mounted mine to the side of my battery on the suspension turret.
Once it is mounted you then need to connect all of the wires to it: here is how it goes;
85 - Ground
86 - To the switch
87 - Positive to lights
30/51 - power from battery
5th step:
Grounding, you need to ground the relay, and fog lights in order for them to work, just find somewhere close to them to earth each one: I did mine under the relay (for the relay) and behind my air box (for the fogs) to keep the wires out of the way.
Now you have finished the wiring in the engine bay you can now start working in the car!
6th step:
Now you need to wire up the switch, depending on if you are using the wire loom that goes on the back of the switch or just the switch itself there are two ways... I am only going to show the way without the wiring harness to the switch as I didn't have one.
If only using the switch the wires connect to it like so;
1 - Ground
2 - 85 on the relay
3 - side light feed (for light on switch)
4 - side light feed
5 - warning light (didn't have a prong on this so I didn't use it)
If you are just using the switch itself you will need to use spade crimps to fit on the prongs.
When I ground my switch I did it in the driver’s side kick panel as it was easiest place to get too.
Connect the wire you ran from the relay into the car to number 2 on the switch.
Splice into the side light feed (found mine was a grey and black wire) and run a wire to number 3 on the switch. Bridge a connection from number 3 to number 4 on the switch.
7th step:
Testing! Now that you have connected up the relay, switch and fog lights together it's time for testing!
Connect the battery back together and turn your lights on and then click your switch! Your fog lights should come straight on! If they don't you have either: not earth something good enough, connected the switch or relay wrong, not connected the wires together good enough or the bulbs in them are broken!
If you get any problems give me a message and I will try help as much as I can. There might be some things that I have missed and if there is I’m happy to take criticism from anyone!
