My Bearing has gone :(

Hi There
I bought a Corsa b envoy 1.0 litre 4 days ago. when i went to go view it on a Monday. we went for a test drive and everything was Ok ( no sound of a rumble or squeak from any wheel bearing)
after i purchased the vehicle it was still fine driving it 20 miles back to my house. the next day i went for a drive and a small rumbling sound came from the nearside rear wheel . i knew it was the bearing so i called up my mate to check it in for a new bearing on Saturday. earlier this evening the bearing went the wheel had far to much play in the wheel and when i pulled over to the side of the road to look the was steam and allot of heat coming from the wheel.

i am just wondering if that's pretty serious i.e do you think i would need a new rear drum and bearing ?
also i am wondering if somebody would do a step by step in simple language on how to change this bearing as i have never done it on a Corsa before.
if you could help me you will be a life saves as i do not have the money to get it done by a garage.

Getting it towed back to my house tomorrow so i can start the work required . any help given will be widely appreciated
thank you

Hi and welcome along :)

The steam was probably from them drum brakes but there simple to adjust with the drum off

For the bearing, first remove the wheel support the car on axle stands and dont have the hand brake on

Remove the dust civer from the centre of the drum, and with long nose pillers and a hammer remove the spilt pin in the caster nut

Now your ready to tackle removeing the drum, it will be difficult but with hammer and to big flat head screwdrivers, hit the the drum a couple times with the hammer to loosen it and try prise it off with the screwdriver, repeat this till removal,

Once the drum is off you can pull most off the bearing away along with a rubber ring that will be on the shaft,

To remove the inner bearing shells you need a press or a hammer and screwdriver/socket, so knock them out

Its now time to build the bearing so first smear everything in grease, so you have to drive the new inner shells inro the drum, once the shells are un you can place the bearing in the drum along with the rubber ring, the bearing should completly in th drum now so its time to fit it back on

May need the hammer again, but once its on slip the small bearing in and the washer then put the nut.back on and replace the spilt pin

It sounds alot but it can be done in 5-10 mins longer if its your first time
