Engine rattle...

I drove 270 miles to Southampton a few days ago and then did the same distance (more or less) on the way back and now my engine is rattling! I gave the car a full service before the long trip (new oil, filters, spark plugs etc..) and it sounded fine, although it used to have a slight rattle before i serviced it.... Now it sounds like a diesel when the engine gets hot and has only been doing it after driving to Southampton and back :meh:.

I'm guessing my timing chain is on the way out? I was traveling 60-70mph for most of the journey and sometimes hit 80mph, but the car seemed to cope fine with no hiccups or dodgy noises. What do you guys think? It's the 1.2 16V X12XE engine (Corsa B SXi).

What colour is the oil? If the oil gets very hot on long jurneys it doesnt keep its lubrication propertys for very long so could be that

Chains can last the life of the car if serviced regularly

Is it just the normal ticking corsa sound or a rattle

It's kind of a tapping/clattering noise and i can only describe it as sounding like a diesel. The oil is still a light brown/golden colour as i only changed it a little while ago... It's GM 10w40 semi synthetic so it should be semi-decent oil (i'm hoping). The engine temp stayed at around 90c during the journey (the cooler side of the temp gauge) and it rises half way when sitting in traffic, but that's also when the fan kicks in.

I'll also add that i noticed a small bit of "mayo" around the full mark on the dipstick :o. I know it's usually condensation with these old Corsas if you have it under the oil cap, but could it also be condensation if it's on the dipstick?

You could.try another oil change and would say if its chain or somthing else

Mayo on the dip stick can be condensation just check it every once and a while

The oil in the car at the moment has probably only done around 600-700 miles... Could it really degrade that quickly if it gets hot? The only time it could get too hot is when idling in traffic for too long (but the fan kicks in anyway).

Thats water temp,

The some oils go off quite quiickly but gm oil is good so it might not be if you get a vid of the noise i will be able to tell if its normal or not
