Coolant question.

Post by tonydbird »

Hey guys

I'm on my first car (2nd month) and learning things at a pace, so this question may seem a bit newbish.

corsa b, 1996, p reg , 1.4l , 8v

Now we are coming up to the winter I'm thinking about the anti freeze and whether I should put some in (if it already has any I don't know). If so what should I use, I've read on other forums to use a summer / winter one, my other question is do I use just that neat and no water or do I mix?.

There is what I believe to be water in the tank (as I do top up occasionally) should I remove this before hand? if so could one of you kind people explain how I do that ?

Many thanks

I'm finding this site to be most helpful TBH

hi,

i can only speak from what i do really, i use the blue stuff 2 year coolant, in winter i generally mix it 50/50 which is ok down to -36 deg (according to the bottle anyway) although u can also mix it 1 part coolant 2 parts water which is ok down to -20 deg..

as for the water already in, u can either empty ya system and start again, or buy a coolant test thingy (i got one for about £4) , which tests the concentration of the water/coolant mix in your system and try and add coolant as needed to you get the mix u want.. probably easier to just empty the system and start a fresh tbh... if you want to empty ya system and your radiator is the same as mine you'll need to pull the bottom hose off your radiator..

thats my 2pence for what its worth

I recently flushed out my old coolant and replaced it with 50% de-ionised water and 50% Bluecol red antifreeze.... Shouldn't need changing for a long time now.
