Won't idle problem - fixed

Hope someone finds this useful:-
2000 x reg 1,2 16v x12xe would not idle, or would just about but running rich at 200rpm. Engine light did not come on. Started OK and once the revs picked up would run ok if a bit lumpy at steady speeds. This problem was intermittent to start with, one day it was fine, next day it wasn't.
I thought it might be the ICV, but when that went wrong before the EML would come on. I cleaned it anyway but no difference.
Bought a can of carb cleaner and cleaned the throttle body inside and out. Also found the breather from the rocker box might have been blocked with custard.
This fixed it for a day, but then the problem returned. Disconnected the Mass Airflow Sensor cable and the engine would tick over fine and run OK ish, at least I didn't stall at the lights anymore. EML did come on, so at least I knew the bulb hadn't gone.
Removed the MAF and sprayed the sensor inside with the carb cleaner, a good long wash.
And since then, touchwood, the car has run OK
