Colour coding the bumpers!

Hey guys,
Ive been wanting to do this since I bought my car. You know them crappy plastic pieces of trim that go around the arches etc? They make the car look crappy Ive just got a project pack of sanding paper from halfords, and I was just wondering if you guys could recommend which grade I should use at each stage.
I know I need to first get the orange peel effect away, then smooth it off with a less coarse paper, then primer the plastic, then wet and dry, then start adding the coats with a wet and dry inbetween each coat?
Thanks,
dan
