My airbag lights on,
Ive checked codes and it has an internal fault in airbag ecu, think alternator might have killed it when it wasn't charging right,
Ive got another airbag ecu out of a uncrashed scrapper,
Is it just a matter of swopping units over or do they have to be coded to car??

Not sure about acu coding for these old cars. New ones you certainly do.
Also a quick note. .. do not turn the srscm upside down while it's still connected.. it may set a rollover event and deploy your airbags.

I'd leave the battery disconnected for at least 2 hours before doing anything with it, they hold a charge for awhile, there's people on the interwebs that will tell you that there dogs brothers owners airbag went off after being disconnected overnight but 2 hours has been enough any time I've removed airbags
Be very careful with it though because the disturbing a sensor could set it off

Am a volvo techy so know my way round airbags etc,
hence the question as most newer cars the modules are programmed to rest of car,
