4wd combo b

I'm thinking of converting my van to 4wd using either an f20 or f28 and kaddett/chevette rear axel.

Any thoughts on the project before I source parts. Currently running a 1.7d izuzu so thinking better with f20

Is the f20 a 4wd box? Will a propshaft run down to the back of the van? Floor pan might need cutting. I reckon go for it!

You'd need a cali or cav 4x4 as a donner and cut down the shafts to fit

You'll need to turn the engine 90° and cut the bulkhead, custom make a tunnel for box and shaft you'll need the cali or cav rear end

There's more fabrication than anything else, being realistic if you can't do the fab work done by yourself or a mate its going to cost an absolute fortune, the rear end needs to be completely changed you have to go from leafs to coils and shocks(edit) just to clarify going 4wd means going independent rear suspension

I'd advise against it but I'd love to see it done at the same time

I didn't even think about independant suspension. That would be tricky.

Thinking about it more you might get away with an axle but the leaf springs would have to go

Would the rear axle not get in the way off the rear diff?

Instinct says yes but until it was mocked up I couldn't say for sure, it's possible to have rwd with a back axle but it's just a question if there's room for both under a combo rear end

My gut says yes too

F20 should fit the engine. Rear axel will either need shaving and leaf spring seats fitting to make it over axel as the current axel has a dog leg at the end...or lose the leaf springs and fit the complete rear set up from a kadett.

Not to bad as the rear of the combo is a ladder chassis. Spare wheel is relocated inside so loads of room.

Exhaust would need moving to one side to free up space for the drive shaft. Rear drums and brakes are identical so straight parts swap and retain the handbrake and pcd.

It's almost like vauxhall considered it when they built the Combo. I think the axel track is the same too.

I'll get some pics of underneath next week. Any parts locations appreciated.
