K&N cone filter does the job for me at around £55. i never replaced da panel filter in box when it was in so dont know if its any better on performance.

i personaly have a pvd bfo cone but i do admit i do get a fair bit of heat soak and the damp wether is a pain so im switching back to a normal box/filter for the winter

i might see if i can chop the old box up to make a bit of a heat shield cuz i know what u mean about the filter being open the the heat from the engine. but as long as enough fresh air is entering the engine bay it seems to be fine.
