The New Server... wha??
Posted: Fri Mar 23, 2007 9:28 pm
As some of you have probably noticed, I've been making posts about the build progress of a new server. Well lets straighten all this up and actually say whats what.
Yes - we DO have our very own Server now! ie, It's not a dedicated hosting plan, its not a shared hosting plan, THIS IS OUR VERY OWN HARDWARE TO DO AS WE PLEASE!
So what does that mean for the site? Simple...
The server was located in Germany.
The server was SEVERLY overloaded!
Support was utter crap
We just couldnt expand on what we could do at the time.
It ran poo SLOW!
All in, 1&1 were a complete farce, and to be honest, I'm glad I'm no longer with them.
Currently, the site is hosted on a temporary system I built which is located with me at home. Ok so were on a different website url (corsab.dnsalias.com) but we will be back on the PROPER name soon! Then its all systems go!
So what about this new server? Well... I bought the hardware, I'm currently setting it up, and we have some dedicated Rack Space available for when its fully configured and ready to roll... I'll still be tweaking things on the server when it finally does go 'live' but for now I'm just sorting out all the main bits of it. Just enough to get the site across and running in all its glory. But it doesn't stop there...
The server DOES run the site better than it currently is, it is quicker, more efficient, faster... But I'm still yet to upgrade the hardware inside with some other bits. I need to upgrade the RAM, the CPU (faster, and also increase it to 2 CPU's), and then its done...
Quick screeny of how faster the server seems to be:
Old Server
New Server
If you look at the bottom of the page, you can see the page generation time, Now it doesn't seem like much (half of the fastness that it currently is) BUT there are a few things:
All the pages load in about that same time (the current server can lag a bit and take upto and over 1+ second(s)
The new server is still yet to be upgraded...
So it should mean things will be lightning fast!
Anyways, enough geek talk... I just thought I'd clear things up a little in regards to whats going on behind the scenes... It's costing ALOT more than the £8.99 a month (initial outlay on hardware + Dedicated Rack Space per month) but it should be worth it!

- We can do whatever the hell we want, when we want, how we want.
- We don't have to worry about keeping our 'Host' happy, or pleading with them to update what is otherwise a seriously outdated piece of software, or install something special for us to play with.
- We don't have to mess about with complicated control panels or be restricted on what we can do.
- We ARE in full control!
