Overheating Corsa 1994

My corsa has been fine since ive owned it all of 4 months,i was practicing maneouvers tonight and had the heating on and the temp went through the roof. Once i stopped and drove back the temperature went right down to normal. Later on i drove it at 70-80 and it was fine as i pulled up to reverse park the temp started to rise and as i put the heating on it shott up any ideas??

did the cooling fan cut in?

you'll b able to tell coz it will shake the whole car like a nutter.

corsas do get very hot after a drive and they get bleedin hot very quick.

as long as the collant fan cuts in i wouldnt worry about it.

just keep a eye on the temp gague and if it goes over the top of the red then there will be something wrong with ether the coolant temperature sensor or the fan switch.

the fan did not cut in but the switches look brand new! i have been told to check the radiator for blockages by an old mechanic, tbut ye the fan not cutting in is a bit worrying!

what engine do you have in the corsa?

you say 1.2 but is it a 8v or 16v engine?

try running the car up and grabbing the top and bottom rad hoses you will know if its blocked by that.

more than likely its a fan switch thats gone or the fan itself, try taking the connection for the fan switch off and bridging it should kick the fan in if it dont you know that the fan has had it

tried the hoses seems as if somethigns definately running through it! i have a 8v i assume, tried briging the fan but couldnt find the correct wire to bridge it your help in that.

The fan switch is in the side of the rad on the drivers side if i remember right. remove the multy plug from the end of this and insert wire to bridge the plug.

As another idea might be worth testing the fan in a similar way with a live wire and an earth.

I had a similar problem on my 1.4SRi.

If bridging the connection causes the fan to kick in then it will more than likely turn out to be the thermostat located (if you are looking at radiator from front of car) on the very bottom left hand side of the radiator. They are only a few quid to buy but u could probably nick one from a scrappy (I did! haha). Think its approx 30mm spanner needed to remove it and will warn you they are stiff little buggers to remove!

try way everyone has sugested, check the top and bottom hoses when the temp gague goes up close to red, so you can get a more accurate reading,

it is most prolly the thermostat, as Puresound said they aint much at all, i think if i remember right the rubber gasket is 50 odd pence and the thermostat is around 10 quid so its tuppance eight penny really.

If it is the thermostat would the hoses not feel cold when the temperature reading is high????

if it was the thermostat the hose may ether be cold or hot to touch but it wont be as hot as the rest of the hoses.

you may even have a air blockage...
