Should i have a Hamd brake light

hi guys
now im not a complete spanner when it comes to cars, but. i was on my way back from watching arsenal on wednesday night in london, and i left my hand brake half on for about 5miles i know,lol. but now when i park there is know handbrake light on the dash

1. am i suppose to have one in the first place
2. is it easy 2fit it, if there is suppose 2be a light on the dash

all cars, to my knowledge come wit a hand brake light

the problem could b the switch has gone, as in broke

i dnt believe it will b much to sort out
