head gasket

i have a 1.4 sri 16v ecotec engine and i think the head gasket has gone or on its way out. first of all the car started to over heat so checked the water and it was low so topped up and was fine for about 2 weeks then started to do it again. when i checked the the oil cap there was gungy stuff on it, so i checked the dip stick only to find traces of water, is this defently the head gaskit and how expensive would it cost to do?????
