gear stick help

i was givin a ripspeed gear knob for crimbo but i am havin trouble fitting it i can put the sleeve on and it fits but the spring shows up and it also dosent let me choose reverse 
i was wondering is it safe to cut the metal shaft down and inch or less so that it will make it fit.
