Random Question- 1.0 12V engine speed on motorway.

Post by kedw200 »

This may seem a random question, but I am one of the peasantry group with a 1.0 12v that doesn't have a rev counter. I'm looking into getting the dial pod from a 1.0 with the rev counter etc but I know there can be issues regarding changing mileage etc, PLUS I actually haven't found one for sale! Haha.

Anywayyy, one of the main things I was wondering (and those who have a 1.0 with a rev counter should be able to help me), when driving at 70mph on the motorway, what engine speed does the 1 litre spin at in 5th? I know most cars settle around 3000RPM, but the 1.0 does seem to be a little more high revving than that, just wondered what exactly it's doing... 3500?

And the point of me finding this out?

I simply want to know

Cheers,

Paul

if you talk to duncan pound on here im sure he's got two spare 1L dials with the rev counter fitted, so it should just be a remove and replace, instead of having to wire in a rev counter,

70mph on the motorway, what engine speed does the 1 litre spin at in 5th?
Mine sits around 3500 to 4000 sitting at 70 with two people in it and the roof bars (but no bikes) on the roof. With bikes on it sits at 4000.

Cheers David- I was really eager to know, haha.

And wow, that's pretty high! No wonder it sounds as if it's working so hard!

yeah - its much happier sitting at 60 - sits at just below 3k that way.

If I drive like a loon and peg it to 5k before I change gear etc I can get from Glasgow to Inverness (normally via Laggan etc) and back in tank of petrol with the bikes on the roof. If I drive it nicely and keep it at 60 on the A9 then I can get from Glasgow to Inverness, drive around a few days in the Inverness and then get home on a tank.

I don't really know what worth a rev gauge has to the 1 litre engine, as you have heard it shouts at you to change gear when it wants you to. Mine red lines at 6k and I have only managed to get it there a few times without the noise from the engine deafening me... :D

bear in mind its a little 1.0 engine and in order to get any sort of poke from it you have to rev the knackers off of it
especialy at motorway speeds!

i never used to drive on the m-way in my corsa as i didnt feel it was up to the job as much as i loved the car to bits
used to need a hell of a run up to get up to 70mph!

Yeah, I'm undecided with regards to the dials tbf- sometimes I want one, then other times I don't.

I'm just a bit of a nerd and like to know exact speeds sometimes.

I wondered how mine would be on the motorway but I actually find it very decent- the ride is fairly comfortable and when I'm at 70 it doesn't take a massive amount of encouragement (as I thought it would) to go that little bit faster to overtake a dodgy driver also doing 70.

That said, I don't have the balls to take it past 80. According to the book I'd only have 13mph left to play with before hitting top speed? Heyelll no!

Bollocks to that. Mine has done over the ton. Obviously on a closed track and certainly not on the A9 down the steep hill into Inverness. That would be silly.

It depends how much faff you can put up with. For me after removing the heater control panel I am never going near anything on the dashboard again :)

i still have the rev counter dials if anyone wants to buy some

my car sits at 3k at 60 and 4k at 70mph and have driven on motorways loadsa times and the temp doesnt change :D

I wouldn't worry to much about the engine at 80. Ive got 96 out of my old 1.0l and that was at about 5500k. At 80 it will be at about 4500k and it'll have a bit more to go :) and as duncanpound said, the temp wont go up much because of how much cold air the engine is getting at that speed.
